Exploring St Albans
From Celtic Verlamion to Roman Verulamium through turbulent medieval times, the dissolution of the most powerful monastery in England and onward to the present day, St Albans has weathered economic, social, religious and political change, becoming a prosperous market town, major coaching route and railway success story and is a city that continues to thrive. A place of strong character and heritage it has a defined and documented conservation area; 72 listed buildings; a plethora of blue plaques recognising important residents of the city; and a rich and diverse history.
One of the best ways to find out more about St Albans is to profit from the wealth of knowledge and experience held by the city’s tour guides and explore one of the themed walks that take place most weekends throughout the year. The guides are all qualified to either Blue Badge or Green Badge level within the Institute of Tourist Guiding and have a comprehensive knowledge of local history and guiding techniques.
There are also walks available in nearby Harpenden, Redbourn and Wheathampstead.
