What’s On
Our programme for 2026 started with the Community Governance public meetings programme that informed the consultation presented to St Albans City and District Council (SADC) for review. The Civic Society continues to work with others as part of the St Albans Parish Council Campaign Group, contributing to planning work around assets, heritage issues and cultural events. A final decision on the way forward will be made by SADC in mid-July 2026.

What’s On for 2026
Come along to hear the Editor of St Albans Times, Matt Adams, talk about why local publications contribute so much to the social, political and cultural fabric of our communities. How is it, in this digital age with social media and sensationalist headlines grabbing attention and influencing discourse, that local newspapers can play a vital and strong role? Are they the lifeblood of our communities, providing news that impacts our lives on a daily basis? Does covering local elections, reporting on school and community news inform, engage, and empower citizens? What is the connection between local newspapers and democracy? ALL WELCOME, FREE TO MEMBERS, £7.50 for non-members. This is a members-only meeting, to complete formal business, review the accounts and reports and elect the 2026-2027 committee. The talk and discussion following the AGM will be open to all. This talk and discussion will be led by an expert panel ready and able to steer the conversation and answer questions. There is no requirement to pre-book but it would help us if you can email secretary@stalbanscivicsociety.com to confirm whether you will be attending. The evening will close with cheese and biscuits, a class of wine and a chance to catch up with members and talk to the committee. ALL WELCOME, FREE TO MEMBERS, £7.50 for non-members. The St Albans Civic Society Building & Design Awards 2026, celebrates imaginative renovation, development and design initiatives completed within the city in the couple of years up to December 2025. Our judges will be selecting winners from a wide range of nominated projects – from entire housing schemes to a beautifully restored archway; anything that enhances the quality of our city’s amenities, environment or public realm. Many of the projects will be new architectural gems or a distinctive and imaginative restoration. Our special prize, the Trevelyan Award, is presented for a striking conservation project. This is an exciting and prestigious evening – please add the date to your diary. We will alert you as soon as tickets become available.
There will be a social gathering with a glass of wine provided as part of the evening.
