Sponsor A Tree; create a memory, celebrate an event, a person(s) or future well-being of our planet
“Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.” Dr Seuss
Trees are a valuable part of our culture, think of poetry without them. Our economy; fuel, building materials and the paper we need for the everyday and those special events. The environment, especially the air we breathe, they are home to all manner of wildlife and they are beautiful. They enhance our sense of wellbeing and improve our mental health.
Yet we take them for granted, imagine St Peter’s Street without those beautiful London Plane trees. Twenty years ago through the efforts of the Civic Society, as part of its Tree Sponsorship Campaign and in partnership with St Albans City & District Council (SADC), 33 were planted, at a cost of £10,000. Since then The Civic Society’s and SADC Tree Sponsorship scheme has raised almost £25,000 to plant trees all over the district. In addition to the tree planting, there was a special Tree Book of Remembrance organised by the Society with free entry for any sponsored tree. Each tree and any dedication has been captured by an artist to mark or celebrate an event, an organisation, anniversary or birthday. It is on display outside the Council Chamber. They say the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, well we did that, and thanks to all the individuals who supported this to make a memory and help create a greener, cleaner St Albans and our planet.
The Tree Sponsorship scheme has now ended. Thank you to all those who contributed to this over many years.
